“Tribute to our Friends” Celebration Honors Health Care Leaders and Supporters

Nearly 100 CancerCare supporters braved the rain last night for the annual “Tribute to our Friends” celebration in our New York City headquarters. Long-time friends and new faces alike gathered together to honor the recognized leaders in patient care, compassionate corporations, and selfless volunteers who are dedicated to helping support our free services for anyone affected by cancer.

Physician of the Year Awards were bestowed on Dr. Edith P. Mitchell, MD, FACP, Clinical Professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, who specializes in gastrointestinal malignancies; and breast cancer specialist Dr. Hope S. Rugo, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine and Director of Breast Oncology Clinical Trials Program at the University of California Comprehensive Cancer Center in San Francisco. Both Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Rugo are long-time participants in our free Connect® Education Workshops which provide thousands of cancer patients, caregivers and health care professionals with the latest news in cancer research and treatment.

Amoena USA Corporation received the Corporate Responsibility Award. Amoena USA, the world’s leading brand of external breast forms and specially designed post-mastectomy lingerie and swimwear, generously donated dozens of breast forms for free distribution through our prostheses clinics for women who have had a breast removed as a result of their breast cancer treatment.

Also honored were Gary Polowitz, longtime participant and fundraiser in the annual CancerCare of New Jersey’s Walk for Hope; Neysa Stern, who helped establish the Special Fund, Friends of CancerCare; and UPS employee Bobby LaPeruta, who has proven invaluable in coordinating CancerCare fundraising events.
